Sunday's Worship Preview

"Look, here is the Lamb of God"

In the Gospel of John, John the Baptist (no relation to the author) is the very first person to recognize and publicly point others to Jesus. John’s vocal witness reveals the truth about Jesus, but interestingly, when John sees and points out Jesus, he doesn’t say, “hey everybody, here is the long awaited Messiah”. He doesn’t say, “here is the great shepherd who has come to lead us” or “here is our new King”. Instead John uses rather unusual language, telling the crowds (twice) “look, here is the Lamb of God” (1:29, 1:36).

For us as Christians in the 21st century, referring to Jesus as the Lamb of God seems perfectly natural. The church has been doing this for centuries. We use that title for Jesus all the time in our worship, especially around the sacrament of Holy Communion. So why might John have chosen that specific phrase to first identify and proclaim Jesus? We will explore how Lamb imagery and language is used throughout scripture and is filled with deep symbolic meaning and significance, both for those first witnesses to Jesus like John the Baptist, and for us today as those who now follow this Lamb.

Peace Feast

Peace Feast

February - May

Do you ever wonder who is in your congregation? Like really wonder who they are? Not just their names. Here is an opportunity for you to share a meal and get to know one another at Peace Lutheran. For the next four months - February, March, April, and May you will have that opportunity. When you sign up (only have to sign up once) you will be assigned to a small group. The host (and you can sign up to be a host-the host organizes the group) will gather your group together for a meal (potluck, restaurant, etc.-your group's choice). Come on the date and place you all agree upon and enjoy each other's company with food, conversation, and laughter. ]

Sign Up online or in the Narthex. So just don't come to the Feast (Holy Communion) on a Sunday morning but to a Feast at another time.

The deadline to sign up is January 31st.

Exploring the Bible Together

Exploring the Bible Together

Zoom Bible Study every Tuesday from 6:30pm -7:30pm

In our “Exploring the Bible Together” study, we meet by Zoom as a small group for about 45 minutes each week. Our study covers a wide range of topics, examining more closely the history, content, context, development, message, and interpretation of the Bible. As we do this, we grow in our understanding of the relevance and application of the Bible for our lives today.

Anyone is welcome to join us - no experience with Bible study (or even the Bible) is necessary!

SEEKERS AND SPONGES:   meets on Sunday mornings @  8:30AM in-person and ZOOM

Seekers and Sponges has started a new DVD series for discussion: "Embracing Emergence Christianity:  Phyllis Tickle on the Church's Next Rummage Sale".  Author, historian and keen cultural observer Phyllis Tickle invites us to join her in examining the changing face of Christianity and culture. Phyllis surveys 2000 years of Western history, identifying the great upheavals that occur in Western culture and Christianity every 500 years. The last was the Great Reformation of the 1500’s; the next is happening now. What are the implications of this “Great Emergence,” both culturally and spiritually? What are the key questions and issues that need to be addressed? Where might we be headed next? And, perhaps most importantly, where are you, at this moment? Might you be an emergence Christian?

Each of the six sessions in this series begins with a 10 -15 minute video presentation by Phyllis Tickle and then our group will discuss her perspectives.

Three Expressions of the Church

We are part of one church body organized in three expressions — congregations, synods, and the churchwide organization. Each expression has its particular functions but all three together share a common mission of doing God’s work in the world and proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ. Together, they ensure a solid foundation of leadership, active involvement in communities, opportunities for dialogue and diverse perspectives, creative partnerships, and support for members and ministries of the ELCA.
