Wake up! It's Advent!

Read Mark 13: 24-37

Wake up! It's Advent!  Yes, in spite of the fact that we have not fully left November behind, Advent is right in front of us.  Have you starting receiving your Advent Cards in the mail?  Have you purchased Advent presents for all the good little children?  Oh...wait.  Maybe I have the wrong holiday?  Maybe that's not what we do traditionally during Advent?  Well, this is an unusual year.

So just what is Advent?  Is it only about waiting for Christmas to finally be here?  How do we approach Advent in a 2020 pandemic year?  And where is God in all this?  The author of Mark 13: 24-37 has some ideas.  We will make our way through these questions during Sunday's sermon... Come hear about the story of God's children.  Come hear our story.

Psalm 100

So many of the Psalms are praises to the Lord giving recognition that God has given all things to us.  King David was renowned for praying these messages regularly keeping his center focused on God’s sovereignty and not his own.

This week as we celebrate our American tradition of Thanksgiving, it is a time for us to reflect on what we are grateful for.  Although the celebration of Thanksgiving has various origins in America, it wasn’t until Thanksgiving was established by Abraham Lincoln in 1863 at the height of the Civil War.  President Lincoln hoped to heal the wounds of the nation and redirect people to realize that despite the war-torn nation, there was still reason to give thanks.

Perhaps we find ourselves in a position of difficulty and despair.  As cases of the coronavirus surge across the nation, we are called to be responsible in the way we celebrate our Thanksgiving traditions.  We must do our best to balance the need for family, community, and tradition with the need for public health measures.  I encourage you to be creative in giving thanks for God’s goodness and to find ways to be cautious and consider your neighbor’s health.

Lastly, I would like to give thanks for you, faithful readers.  Staying connected to one another as the church in Christ is so critical to us.  Like Lincoln and the Psalmist before him, we remember to give thanks particularly in times of trouble; to recognize there is still much to be grateful for; and to direct our praise to the Lord our God who is the great provider of all our needs.
