Sunday’s Preview – How Do We Live Together?

Sunday’s Preview – How Do We Live Together?

Read Acts 15:1-21

Sometimes we picture the early church as an idyllic time when everyone was of one mind. However, when you read the scriptures, you find out pretty quickly that life was just as messy back then as it is now.

Anytime you have people who come together, you have different vantage points of understanding the world. The early church if anything had a greater struggle because they didn’t have the advantage of centuries of working things out.

What we learn is that as God sends us out into the world with others, it requires us coming together and wrestling with the Spirit and what it means to live in community.

Join us on Sunday as we experience community in the Spirit and work together to expand God’s kingdom of love.

Pray Without Ceasing Initiative

Pray Without Ceasing Initiative

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances;
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

As people who follow Jesus, we pray. We pray alone and we pray together.
2025 has brought great change. Whether change is for good or for ill, it often stirs anxiety. When life feels predictable, we tend to feel safe and secure. But when something new or unknown arises, our fight-or-flight response kicks in—an instinct meant to protect us from immediate danger. However, when we live in a state of chronic anxiety, our decision-making narrows, our bodies stay on high alert, and our fear can leak out in harmful ways.

Prayer is God’s gift to us. It is a way to surrender to something greater than ourselves. It helps still our minds, calm our hearts, and center us in God’s promises. Through prayer, we open ourselves to the Holy Spirit, who leads us through every uncertainty and challenge.

As part of our call to live as God’s church—praying and entrusting our lives to God—the ELCA Council of Bishops is inviting congregations to join together in regular, focused prayer.

We already pray each Sunday in worship. But here at Peace, we are creating a dedicated space just for prayer—six Wednesday evenings, May 21 through June 25, from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m.

The hope is that these 30-minute gatherings will:
•    Center us on what God values in this world;
•    Help us learn how to pray and grow in this gift;
•    Deepen our relationships through prayer;
•    Move us from passive belief to active discipleship through the openness of the Spirit.

Will you join in prayer on Wednesday nights?

May Mission Spotlight

May Mission Spotlight

Peaceful Quilters

Our May Mission Spotlight focuses on the industrious Peaceful Quilters of Peace Lutheran.  Since 1999, with few exceptions, every Tuesday 8 to 12 faithful quilters arrive at 9 am or later and stay as long as their personal schedules allow, some as late as 2 or 3pm.   That first year, 16 quilts were produced and sent to Lutheran World Relief.

Peaceful Quilters are both nonmembers and members of Peace Lutheran with active members serving this mission in excess of 20 years. During this time,  community and church projects have included toss pillows for New Life at Canyon Lake,  School Kits, Baby Layettes, Personal and Health kits and Home Altar Cloths for members of Peace.

October 2024 the Quilters completed 537 quilts, with approximately 120 staying locally with clients of First Footing, Comal Crisis Center and New Life in Canyon Lake. The remainder join quilts from other churches and are sent internationally or remain in the US for disaster victims of flood, fire, earthquakes or hurricanes.

Peaceful Quilters are blessed and thankful that most of their supplies are donated.  Donations of colored or printed flat and fitted sheets and cotton fabrics, solid or printed are always welcomed. Monetary donations go to purchasing batting, the most costly supply, and the shipping of the quilts in the fall.

May Mission Spotlight, Sunday, May 25th, a dedicated offering will be collected for Peaceful Quilters. Contact Carol Thatcher or Susan Heise if you are interested in donating time or supplies to the Peaceful Quilters.

God's Storytime

Sunday Morning Worship with Our Children

All Pre-K through Elementary grade children are invited each Sunday to join us for “God's Story”. This is our way of connecting God’s big story to their own stories at a level appropriate for young children. Together we dive into the scripture for the day using a variety of teaching resources. Our goal is to create a safe space for children to have meaningful conversations about God, Jesus, faith, and our everyday lives.

“God’s Story” takes place during the scripture and sermon portion of our worship service (about 20-25 minutes). We meet in our Fellowship Hall, which is in visible proximity to our sanctuary and restrooms. The children are led by our wonderful team of trained and background checked adults from our congregation.

Peace Ministries

PEACE PRAYER MINISTRY:

Did you make any resolutions for the New Year? Many of us have a desire to have a more intimate prayer life, so might I suggest carving out more time for prayer and reflection? Peace Lutheran Church has an active Prayer Ministry. We have an Email Prayer Chain, we have a Zoom “Sweet Hour of Prayer” Group that meets every Monday morning at 9:00 a.m. and we have a Prayer loom that is included in our Sunday morning prayers. I would like to welcome new members to join our email Prayer Chain and our Monday morning Prayer Group. We have experienced some amazing, answered prayers this year and we have given comfort to many of our members in their times of distress. Please consider being a part of our Prayer Ministry in this new year. You can email me at beckyvoges@yahoo.com for more information.

Our weekly Prayer Group Zooms every Monday at 9:00 am  via Zoom only.   Click HERE to join by Zoom.  We have a devotion, share prayer requests and pray over each request. The group is led by Becky Voges.  If you would like to be a part of the group, please email Becky (beckyvoges@yahoo.com).  All prayer requests will be kept confidential.

Three Expressions of the Church

We are part of one church body organized in three expressions — congregations, synods, and the churchwide organization. Each expression has its particular functions but all three together share a common mission of doing God’s work in the world and proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ. Together, they ensure a solid foundation of leadership, active involvement in communities, opportunities for dialogue and diverse perspectives, creative partnerships, and support for members and ministries of the ELCA.

Synod: Southwestern Texas Synod
