Sunday's PreviewWhere is Jesus? In our gospel text for this Sunday (Luke 2:41-52), we find the only account in the gospels of Jesus as a young boy. Jesus’ parents have lost him and are looking everywhere frantically trying to find him. It appears that for three days, their search was unsuccessful, because Jesus was not where they thought he would be. I can only imagine Mary and Joseph’s growing sense of worry, frustration, and even fear as their search continued. Questions must have been swirling through their minds and in the conversations between them as one hour of searching turning into one day, and one day of searching into three days. Perhaps we too, like Mary and Joseph, feel worry, frustration, and fear as we confront the reality of the world we live in today and wonder, like them, “where is Jesus?”.

Three Expressions of the Church
We are part of one church body organized in three expressions — congregations, synods, and the churchwide organization. Each expression has its particular functions but all three together share a common mission of doing God’s work in the world and proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ. Together, they ensure a solid foundation of leadership, active involvement in communities, opportunities for dialogue and diverse perspectives, creative partnerships, and support for members and ministries of the ELCA.
