Sunday Preview – “Golden Calves All Around Us”

Read Exodus 32:1-14

When the Hebrew people were gathered around Mt. Sinai after they were freed from captivity in Egypt, they grew impatient with Moses’ long absence from them (he was pretty busy talking with God!), so they forged a statue of a calf made out of gold to satisfy their desire for something immediate and tangible to worship. Before we react too harshly to the impatience and impertinence of the Hebrew people back then, we might want to reflect carefully on our own tendency of turning our attention and trust in God towards other more immediate, more tangible, more self-serving sources of comfort. The failure of the Hebrew people wasn’t in creating the golden calf, but rather in failing to trust God to provide and care for them. It is a lesson we certainly can learn from.

Deacon Andrew's Farewell Lunch

Deacon Andrew's Farewell Lunch

Thanks from Family Promise

Once again, Peace has been  the host to a successful Family Promise Rotation.  We housed and fed 2 families, totaling 8 people.  We had 2 teens, a preteen and a 4 and 7 year old, that brought our fellowship hall alive throughput the week.

Thanks so much to the angels that provided snacks, towels and bedding for our families and hosts. The new towels were very much appreciated. Our old ones had seen better days, fluffy new ones were another way of welcoming our families.

A big Thank You, to those that were able to bring a meal, visit with our guests, spend the night or do two or all three of our volunteer opportunities. All those that helped with the impromptu set up and take down of our makeshift bedrooms are very much appreciated.

The social worker indicated that our families felt very comfortable with us and enjoyed their time at Peace.

If you are interested in providing a graduation gift to our family of 5 as they move into stable housing and set up their new home, use this link for their Amazon Wish List.

Mission Endowment Fund Grant Applications

Did you know that Peace Lutheran has a Mission Endowment Fund and that grants are given annually to extend God’s ministry to our community and beyond?  It does, and the application deadline for 2025 funding is fast approaching. Any application requests to be considered for 2025 fund disbursement must be received in the church office by October 31, 2024.

The fund is designed to further the missions of Peace Lutheran beyond the allocations of the general operating budget.  Grants are funded from the interest earned on contributions to the fund. Grant application forms are available from either the church office or church website. The forms can be filled out and returned to the church office by the October 31st deadline for consideration by the Mission Endowment Fund committee.

The new Endowment Fund section of the website can be found under the Give drop-down section of the Peace Lutheran main menu. In addition to the grant application form, you will find other helpful resources related to the fund and legacy planning. If you have any questions, please contact Nathan Anderson at nanderson5663@gmail.com.

Crisis Center of Comal County

Our October Mission Spotlight is Crisis Center of Comal County.

The Crisis Center of Comal County provides emergency shelter and services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and women experiencing homelessness.

These services include licensed counselors for clients of all ages through individual and group counseling.  Legal advocacy takes clients through the steps necessary to obtain protective orders, affidavits and filing police reports.

The Crisis Center works with their clients to secure safe, stable housing and accompanies them to medical, legal and criminal service providers if needed.

Peace will collect a dedicated offering for CCCC on Sunday, October 27. You can visit their website for information about volunteering opportunities or shop and support the Comal Thrift Shop.

Nametags

Nametags

Name tags are here and we are excited to put names to faces! We want to create a community that knows one another.

Sometimes nametags create a system of insiders and outsiders; the people who have nametags and those who don’t.  But the new system will be an easy on-demand thermal printing method that will give everyone a chance to be known without the problem of having some kind of special standing.

Not everyone likes to wear a nametag, but our hope is that you’ll practice the gift of hospitality so that others can know your name and recognize the value of community.

Journey to Generosity: The Way of Jesus

October 6, 2024

Psalm 8:4, 6 –What are human beings that you [Lord] are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet.

God gives us dominion over God’s creation, which means we’re in charge. But that also means we have a duty to treat the created world respectfully and use its resources responsibly. How do you think we’re doing? As steward-disciples, how can we do better?

God's Storytime

Sunday Morning Worship with Our Children

All Pre-K through Elementary grade children are invited each Sunday to join us for “God's Story”. This is our way of connecting God’s big story to their own stories at a level appropriate for young children. Together we dive into the scripture for the day using a variety of teaching resources. Our goal is to create a safe space for children to have meaningful conversations about God, Jesus, faith, and our everyday lives.

“God’s Story” takes place during the scripture and sermon portion of our worship service (about 20-25 minutes). We meet in our Fellowship Hall, which is in visible proximity to our sanctuary and restrooms. The children are led by our wonderful team of trained and background checked adults from our congregation. If you’d like to help or have any questions, please reach out to Deacon Andrew.

Faith Talk

with Pastor Jake and Deacon Andrew

Sunday mornings from 8:45 am—9:30 am
In the Fellowship Room
All ages welcome

Bring your coffee & snacks and join us for a time of weekly conversation together. Our focus will be learning basics about Christian faith, belief, and practice through a Lutheran lens. We want this to be an open time for questions and conversation—all questions are allowed and encouraged! Think of it like “Christianity 101”, designed both for folks who are newer to learning about the Christian faith, as well as for anyone who would like to deepen their understanding of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus in the world today. We look forward to seeing you!

Three Expressions of the Church

We are part of one church body organized in three expressions — congregations, synods, and the churchwide organization. Each expression has its particular functions but all three together share a common mission of doing God’s work in the world and proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ. Together, they ensure a solid foundation of leadership, active involvement in communities, opportunities for dialogue and diverse perspectives, creative partnerships, and support for members and ministries of the ELCA.
